Gandfather with prostate Cancer…. wont get help….?

My grandfather was diagnosed with prostate cancer more than a year ago. His doctor told him that he wanted to see him in exactly ONE year….. It’s been 1 yr and 4 months since his last doctor’s visit and he does not want to go to the doctor to get a check up. He has been very sick lately…. goes to the bathroom every 30 minutes, has painful urination, and pretty much just stays in his bed because he is too tired and has pain. I know the cancer is back and may be even advanced but he does not want to go to the doctor, and we cant make him go since he does not live in this country. What is the life expectancy of patients with prostate cancer? If he keeps denying help for the cancer, how long could he live? Any extra information would be very useful! Thanks!
Sorry….. I meant GRANDFATHER!! sorry about that!!!

First off I am sorry to hear about your Grandfather. I am 64 and was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 2004. I also didn’t want to go to the Doctor until the pain became so bad I had to go. Prostate Cancer is usually slow growing and there are drugs that will stem the growth of the cancer extending the patients life. As a lay person I am not qualified to say how long he could live. Two of my Doctors gave me two years to live and I have gone past that time frame. You don’t mention where the pain is and if the cancer has metastasized by the tumors going to the bones, which happens in advanced Prostate Cancer then the only recourse is to go to the Doctor. In your case it sounds like a vicious circle. Though my cancer is advanced and the tumors have spread I plan on being around for quite a while. I will stay on my medication and keep the cancer in check. Does he have family close to him? Can they convince him to see the Doctor? That is where he needs to go. There really is no other alternative. Sorry.

Question about prostate cancer?

my dad got prostate cancer a couple months back. But after a couple weeks after he found out, they removed the prostate and said it was all contained in the prostate. however, he went back for a check up and they did a blood test (twice) which revealed that he still had the cancer. im worried about where it can go. i was happy when they said it was contained cuz there was no way he could get sick or possibly die. but now, can it get into his bones or abdominal organs? and if it does will he die? plz help me this is my father im talking about. i dont know what would happen to me without him.

rob answers:

Yes this means it can spread anywhere. The most common metastatic site is the bone. You are not giving any information to be specific to your father, but prostate cancer is usually very slow growing. It is not uncommon for men to live with it 15-20 years and even when it does spread men often die from something else. This is not to say he could not die from it, but most don’t. Chemo is not used until very late in the disease and many men never get chemo.

Daniel asks…

Please tell me this isnt prostate cancer im only barely 19!?

Im a healthy just turned 19 year old male. On friday afternoon i started having these weird symptoms. I began urinating frequently, however in very small amounts. I also started having urinary hesitancy. It can take a minute or more for me to get urine flow. My dad has threatened to kick me out of the house (jokingly) because I keep talking about this. He says i have some kind of infection at worst (i sure believe and hope so). Anyways, i wish i could be ok and relax thinking its a urinary tract infection, but ive got no pain or blood in urine. I dont have an STD because im a virgin. Im scared enough to have made an appointment for tomorrow with a urologist. Im hoping its either a bladder infection of some kind or a UTI without pain or blood (dont even know if its possible) I as a hypocondriac researched this for the past 2 days. Im way too young to either have an enlarged prostate or prostate cancer, however i have the hesitancy, urge to go frequently with little urine coming out, and no pain! these are some of the symptoms of prostate cancer and or enlarged prostate. I dont want to lose any more sleep from this, can anyone help me with reasons this cant be prostate cancer and how im just overreacting? Thanks so much!

rob answers:

Only rarely does a UTI cause bleeding, and you can sometimes have a UTI without pain. There are also many other things, such as stones, that could be the cause of these symptoms that are not cancer. The likelihoo of someone your age having prostate cancer is very slim.

By the way, Rx used in the answer above, means prescribe/treatment, and I agree, you will most likely get antibiotics from the urologist tomorrow.

Advanced Prostate Cancer with Spine Metastases?

My Dad was diagnosed with Stage D Prostate Cancer, advanced cancer. He has been doing Chemotherapy, radiation treatment, taking medications, and he has been in clinical trials. About two months ago, he had a surgery to help him go to the bathroom without pain, I don’t know all the details really. Ever since then, he had to take off work (which he NEVER does) because of just how much pain he has been in. He was scanned and tested and admitted to the hospital.
The Doctor declared that the cancer spread to his spine, meaning bone metastases. My Dad is 55 years old.
I just really am asking, what is going to happen? Surgeries, more trials, medications? And the worst, survival rate.
He was diagnosed two years ago, my bad.

rob answers:

He has stage 4 cancer, there is no stage D.
Clearly it was advanced when he was diagnosed. Chemo does little to nothing for prostate cancer so I am not sure why they are doing that. Maybe it is part of the clinical trial, which is a last resort for incurable cancers.
I am sorry but he must have an aggressive cancer if hormone treatment could not keep bone mets away for a few years. If he were an older man with a less aggressive cancer he could live a few years with bone mets, but not at his age. His doctor would have a much better idea, but if I had to guess I would say 12-18 months.

22 with Prostate or Colon cancer?! HELP!!?

I am 22 years old. this is my time line.. 2 months ago went to er and was told i had protitis, epiditimitis, and a small hernia. I got my hernia fixed after they thought the anitobiotics cleared up the itis’.. for the past 2 months ive experianced pain in ejaculating. and i have quite a few of the prostate cancer symptoms and quite a few of the colon cancer symptoms. every time i go to the doctor they tell me its nothing. i know this isnt in my head.. please help me! could prostate cancer this early be possible? NEED ANSWERS ASAP!!

rob answers:

You have a diagnosis why don’t you believe your doctor?
Get a second opinion if you don’t believe him or need answers.
22 year-olds do not get prostate cancer and colon cancer is very rare at this age. Your diagnoses do explain your symptoms however. You need to go back to your doctor and let them know you are still not well otherwise they do not know.
